Abigail Hawkins, MD

Dr. Abigail Hawkins is a board-certified psychiatrist in private practice. She has over a decade of experience treating a broad range of issues including anxiety and depression, bipolar disorders, substance and behavioral addictions, ADHD, and difficulties with work and relationships. Her approach is compassionate and practical, and she often works with other clinicians to provide the best comprehensive, individualized care to her patients.
Dr. Hawkins specializes in psychotherapy, combining therapy with medication, and addiction. When appropriate for substance use treatment, she administers Vivitrol (naltrexone) and prescribes Suboxone (buprenorphine) and other medications for withdrawal and cravings. Dr. Hawkins also meets with families of people with addiction. Her approach is informed by CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), a framework that improves communication and promotes change and growth.
After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, with Distinction in the History major, Dr. Hawkins earned her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her adult psychiatry residency at NYU Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Hawkins has extensive experience treating undergraduate and graduate students at the NYU Student Health Center, and she has been in private practice since 2016.
Dr. Hawkins is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, where she teaches medical students. Dr. Hawkins is also the Associate Director of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Program at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training & Research — an advanced psychotherapy course for psychiatrists and other psychotherapists.
Dr. Hawkins is available for in-person and tele-medicine appointments. She meets with new patients for a comprehensive 90 minute initial appointment. Once in treatment with Dr. Hawkins, appointments are typically 45 minutes. Payment for the initial consultation is due at the time of service.
Dr. Hawkins does not participate in any health insurance plans and has opted out of Medicare. She will provide you with an itemized invoice containing all the information necessary for insurance reimbursement.
